Blog post: 'The parietal lobe in action' Richard Andersen, Caltech
One of the best things about working at a university your whole life is the amazing talks and speakers that you get to see. I’ve just been to see Richard Andersen from Caltech talking on the ‘Parietal lobe in action’ (Parietal lobe and action = two of my favourite things..). Suffice to say, it was impressive. Here’s a little summary:
Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is association cortex (i.e. not primary cortex)…
ASA Satellite Symposium on December 1st, 2013: Neural bases of speech production
A satellite event of the 2013 fall meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in San Francisco, California.
How does the neural circuitry of the brain create speech, and what are the constraints on this process? In the past several years, there has been exciting progress on many aspects of this topic, and at this symposium we will hear from many of the leaders in the field who are advancing it. In a full-day symposium, a series of twelve speakers will present the latest findings on the…

A bilateral cortical network responds to pitch perturbations in speech feedback
Auditory feedback is used to monitor and correct for errors in speech production, and one of the clearest demonstrations of this is the pitch perturbation reflex. During ongoing phonation, speakers respond rapidly to shifts of the pitch of their auditory feedback, altering their pitch production to oppose the direction of the applied pitch shift. In this study, we examine the timing of activity within a network of brain regions thought to be involved in mediating this behavior. To isolate…
