Theories of the neural basis of speech production tend to emphasize roles for error detection/correction in auditory fields. In my talk I will outline reasons why the role of auditory cortex in speech production may be more complex than this. I will also address aspects of plasticity in speech production and suggest that to understand this variability in speech may be more likely to reflect social goals in communication rather than error reduction/correction.
